ADR SCAMP PSU!!

Postby roginator » Sun Apr 11, 2010 7:50 am

ok Question for Brian !!!

I heard that most of scamp PSU suck..and they are low quality ....
how about that major one !!! 2 HE.. with 48v... How good it is!!!

I plan to run FULL scamp rack in near future + some added racks...

1 ch of racked neve 1073 and siemens U 273a in other rack.. all feed from Scamp PSU!

what you think about that....
I think it have enough juice to run that and more
..how about quality of that juice!!!!!

Dear Damir,

The circuit design of the 2 RU sized power supply is VERY basic, and in my experience is quite reliable. If I recall correctly, the circuitry consists of the required power transformer, rectifiers and filter capacitors, and "three terminal" regulators. Hence, there is little to "go wrong".

The smaller "shoe box" SCAMP power supply is another story, since it is capable of much lower DC current.

I recently removed two SCAMP racks from service at a studio (and they ARE for sale!) and the power supplies showed no signs of distress after nearly 30 years of service. Perhaps the rectifier filter capacitors are in need of replacement, but I did not conduct a full test.

I would need to analyze the total current consumption for a loaded SCAMP rack plus the added Neve and Siemens modules to ensure that your application does not exceed the maximum current capability of the "major" PSU.

Best,

Bri

PS, here are some snapshots of the SCAMP racks just before the remodel of the control room:

I have a lot of equipment that worx on +/- 24v or just +24v

and I will set -/+24v PSU to feed em all in a rack!!!
I have WSW siemens PSU that are +24v/4A and -24V/4A ......

with +/- 24v I need to feed my:
5x S01 SCAMPS cant find how much S01 eat power!!
Barth Dynaset (bouth cca 120mA)

With - 24v ... 4 WSW geramanium Preamps (all 4 cca 480ma)

and with +22....-26v:
2x NTP limiters (bouth cca 260mA)
4x WSW silicon preamps (all 4 cca 360mA)
1x NEVE 1073 ... (I believe not over 200mA)
2x WSW EQ (bouth cca 80mA)
2x WSW limiters/compressors (cca 160mA)
2x Siemens U273a (bouth cca 150mA)

so i made calculation
ADR MAJOR PSU! is "IF IM RIGHT" ... +28v 2,5A and -28v 1,5A

I think that will work OK !!! couse negative rail wont suck over 1.2A
and positive rail wont suck over 2A

thats is IF IM RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :geek:

so there is also question!!! is it ok to feed all that Units from SAME ADR PSU!!! ... I dont believe i will have some problems ... BUT I STILL ASK!!!!!!!

I dont think there will be any problem damir, also most of the equipment amp rating is most of the time its maximum value, and in practice (at least in my experience) most of the time they consume lower than the ratings.

Dear Damir,

I did find what I believe to be the "major" power supply schematic, and it indeed uses LM-338 three-terminal regulators, which are rated for up to 5 Amps. I also see a 4A fuse on the + rail and a 2.5A fuse on the negative, so you should be OK.

One thing I noted is that the supplies were adjusted for +/- 28 VDC via internal trimmer pots, so I'm unsure if they can be trimmed back to 24 V without some minor circuit modifications.

Best,

Bri

Damir,
Tony Arnold knows all about Scamp and AD+R stuff, so since he is relatively in your part of the world (relatively) you ought to contact him.

OK I keeped major PSU !!!! its working AWESOME!!!!

:)

BTW!!!

I also made some Special module for my scamp rack hehehehe

was thinking to make rack for two Barth U311 Dynaset danner modules ... and i found some blank panels and PCBs for my ADR scamp rack so .. it took me 2 days for all!

draw, cutting, get parts, upgrade Barth from 202 to 202c dbx VCA, recapping, wireing, calibration and testing .. whole weekend :geek:

here are few pictures!!

Extremely nice looking work my man! :D
Is Barth German stuff?

Nice to see you post, too!

(BTW... after a bit of a "vacation" from working on the MCI 538C I have completed the re-cap of ALL of the EQ sections.
Now I have the master sections 100% re-capped, the first 12 channels 100% re-capped and then the rest have new caps in the EQs. I have all of the required caps, but I have been too busy to get to it again!
The entire console works except for a few issues with the MON INPUT REV circuit on three channels.)
